officials Training
Team parents run all aspects of our meets, from the timers with their stopwatches to the operators of the computer that stores the times. We also need parent volunteers to be stroke and turn officials who watch swimmers and make sure strokes and turns are legal. The main purpose of this job is to give coaches feedback in the form of DQ (disqualification) slips about the things swimmers need to work on to achieve legal technique. The other purpose is to keep the playing field level by disqualifying swimmers that may gain unfair advantage through illegal technique.
We have had parents with no swimming background watch the training videos (below), study the rules, and attend a training session with Nadiator coaches to become officials at our meets. If you are interested in helping with this, watch the videos and contact the coaches. At pool's edge you'll have one of the best views of the races!
USA Swimming's officials training videos are essential viewing for those interested in helping as stroke and turn officials at our meets.
Examples and Quiz
For rules about stroke and turn technique, our Central Illinois Swim Conference follows the USA Swimming Rulebook (see pages 21-26).
Training Presentation (Stroke and Turn) (very useful for distilling the main things to watch for in each stroke).
